MR. MONK GOES TO GERMANY, the sixth Monk novel, comes out in hardcover in July and is set in Lohr, Germany, where legend has it that Snow White once lived. I got the idea for the book while leading a TV writing & producing seminar for industry professionals at the Franziskushohe hotel in Lohr, which is the home-town of Hermann Joha, one of the most successful and famous TV producers in Germany. Hermann owns the hotel and is a gracious host...as well as a major Monk fan. I'd never been to Germany until Hermann invited me to his studio in Koln two years ago to consult on some of his projects (and, ultimately, to write and produce the movie FAST TRACK: NO LIMITS in Berlin last summer). I immediately in love with the country and its people.
The whole time I was there, which added up to well over six months, I couldn't help imagining how Monk would react to the things I was seeing. So I guess in some ways, MR. MONK GOES TO GERMANY is my love letter to the country. During the last two years, I traveled extensively through Germany, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, the UK, and France. It was wonderful...and I'm sure those experiences will influence my writing for years to come. I was already very familiar with France, though. My wife is French and we go there each year to visit her family. So I suppose it was only natural, and inevitable, that I ended up setting the seventh Monk novel, MR. MONK IS MISERABLE, in Paris. MISERABLE picks up immediately where GERMANY leaves off and my editor thinks it's the best book in the series so far...but I will leave that up to you to decide when it comes out in December. MR. MONK IN OUTER SPACE, which was written mostly in Berlin, is now out in paperback. MR. MONK GOES TO GERMANY comes out in paperback in November. My screenplay "Mapes For Hire," based on my novel THE MAN WITH THE IRON-ON BADGE, has been adapted as a stage play and is being performed June 12-23 at the International Mystery Writers Festival in Owensboro, Kentucky. Gary Sandy, best known as the star of "WKRP in Cincinnati," is among the cast members. I am looking forward to seeing it! I am hard at work on MR. MONK AND THE DIRTY COP, the eighth book in the series, and developing several new movie and TV projects with various studios and producers. I am also noodling with an idea for "stand-alone" novel that I hope to write this year. I think that's about it for now. I hope you enjoy MR.
